                                         Welcome to our Web site!

The Albury City Band tracks its history back to 1867. Records show that it is one of the oldest continuously operating bands in the Southern Hemisphere, having never gone into recess during wartime or the Great Depression. Our claim to be the oldest has never been disputed. The band has now been entertaining the local community for over 135 years.

During the latter 1800's and early 1900's, community bands were very popular, with little other relaxation activities for the people generally, and the band entertained regularly at Noreuil Park, the Botanic gardens, Dean Square (now QEII Square) and from various main street hotel balconies.

In earlier times the band was a brass band which took part in many State competitions and contests, meeting with a great deal of success. The last occasion we contested was in 1950 when the band won the NSW 'A' Grade Aggregate for set piece, own choice and marching.

The Albury City Band remains one of the busiest community bands in Australia and undertakes a program of around 35 appearances each year, in addition to weekly rehearsals. Most playouts are for the Council and a wide range of community and charitable groups from Albury and District.

In 1985 the band changed musical direction to become a Concert Band which includes a wide range of woodwind instruments and an extended percussion section as well as the brass family of instruments. Becoming a Concert Band, with its greater flexibility, sound and repertoire has ensured the Albury City Band remains in great demand for community events.

During summer months (daylight saving), the band plays on alternate Monday evenings in small parks within the residential areas of the city. 'Taking the music to the people' has proven to be a huge success for the band, drawing large audiences consisting of family groups who enjoy being out in the cool of the evening, people walking their dogs or watering their gardens.

During the winter months the band tries where possible to select venues outdoors to attract family groups, such as at the Rotary 'Trash & Treasure' markets, but always has indoor venues in mind in case of adverse weather.

The popularity of the band among players has seen the band grow steadily in size with just over 50 members on stage at our 2004 Annual Concert at the Albury Performing Arts Theatre. Since our first ever Annual Concert in 1986, our average audience numbers are around 500. These free, two and a half hour concerts in a wonderful theatre have proven to be a wonderful success for the band, which the players look forward to immensely each year.

The band rehearses  every Wednesday evening commencing at 8.00pm at the band hall in Reserve St (F14), Albury. We welcome concert and brass band musicians to 'sit in' at rehearsals when visiting Albury/Wodonga, or when moving to this area for short or long term postings.
